How PPF interest is calculated

Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and last day of each month, but compounds annually. Depositing before the 5th of the month (ideally at the start of the year) maximises the interest you earn — this calculator assumes deposits are made at the start of each year, which is the best-case, commonly-used estimate.

The current PPF rate is 7.1% p.a. (unchanged since April 2020, confirmed for Jul–Sep 2026 by the Ministry of Finance). Rates are reviewed quarterly and may change — adjust the rate field to test other scenarios.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum I can invest in PPF per year?

₹1,50,000 per financial year is the maximum eligible for interest and Section 80C deduction. Deposits beyond this limit don't earn interest.

Is PPF interest taxable?

No. PPF is an EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) instrument — your contribution, the interest earned, and the maturity withdrawal are all tax-free.

What is the minimum PPF tenure?

15 years, extendable in blocks of 5 years after maturity, with or without further contributions.
