Mass units, and the difference between mass and weight

Converting between kilograms, pounds, ounces, grams and stones is exact, again thanks to the 1959 agreement: a pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. An ounce is a sixteenth of that, and a stone is fourteen pounds, still used for body weight in Britain and Ireland. The kilogram itself was redefined in 2019 in terms of the Planck constant, ending its dependence on a physical cylinder held in France.

Strictly, these are units of mass rather than weight. Mass is how much matter an object contains and does not change; weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass, and it varies with location — the same person has identical mass on the Moon but roughly a sixth of the weight. Everyday usage blurs this and the distinction rarely matters on Earth. One place it does is the ton: a metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms, a US short ton is 2,000 pounds (about 907 kg) and a UK long ton is 2,240 pounds (about 1,016 kg), so an unqualified "ton" is genuinely ambiguous.

Frequently asked questions

How many kilograms in a pound?

Exactly 0.45359237, by international definition since 1959. A kilogram is therefore about 2.20462 pounds, and the conversion can be made exactly rather than approximately.

What is the difference between mass and weight?

Mass is the amount of matter and is constant. Weight is the gravitational force on that mass and varies with location. On the Moon your mass is unchanged while your weight is about a sixth of what it is on Earth.

Is a ton the same everywhere?

No. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg, a US short ton is about 907 kg and a UK long ton about 1,016 kg. An unqualified "ton" is ambiguous, so the system should always be stated.

What is a stone?

Fourteen pounds, about 6.35 kilograms, used mainly in Britain and Ireland for body weight. It is rarely used elsewhere and almost never in scientific or commercial contexts.
