How Number Bonds: Decimal Bonds works

Number bonds are the pairs that add to a fixed total — 3 and 7 make 10, 40 and 60 make 100. Knowing them by instant recall rather than by counting is the foundation everything else in mental arithmetic is built on.

This is deliberately the simplest game in the library. It is also, for a child who does not yet know their bonds cold, the most valuable one here.

Frequently asked questions

Why do number bonds matter so much?

Because every later shortcut depends on them. Adding 8 by thinking 'add 10, take 2' only works if 10 and 2 are already automatic. Children who count on their fingers for bonds stay slow at everything downstream.

Is this only for young children?

No. The bonds-to-100 and decimal levels are a genuinely useful warm-up at any age, and the large, unhurried format suits older players who want recall practice without time pressure.

How long should a session be?

Two or three rounds of ten. Frequent short sessions build recall far better than one long one.
