How Balance the Equation: Algebra works

Each round hides one number in an otherwise complete equation and asks you to find it. The early levels are pure arithmetic; the algebra level introduces a variable, which is the same puzzle wearing different clothes.

That is the point of including both in one game. Children are often taught that ? + 17 = 42 and x + 17 = 42 are different kinds of problem. They are not, and playing them back to back makes that obvious in a way an explanation rarely does.

This version: Solve for x in linear equations. Your best score is saved in this browser, so you can come back and try to beat it. Nothing is uploaded and no sign-up is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is the algebra level really algebra?

Yes, in form: it presents equations like 3x + 4 = 19 and asks for x. But if you can do the arithmetic levels you can do this one, which is rather the point.

Do I type the answer or pick it?

You type it, so there is no guessing from options.

What if the answer is negative?

It never is. All levels are generated so the missing value is a positive whole number.
