How N-Back: 2-Back works

Numbers appear one at a time. Press Match whenever the current number is the same as the one N steps earlier. In 2-back, you are comparing against the number from two positions ago while still taking in new ones.

It is genuinely uncomfortable at first, because it requires continuously updating what you are holding rather than just storing it. That updating is the defining feature of working memory as psychologists use the term.

Frequently asked questions

Does N-back training make you smarter?

This is honestly contested. Early studies suggested it improved fluid intelligence; larger replications have mostly found gains confined to the task itself. Treat it as an enjoyable challenge, not a proven intelligence booster.

What is a good level?

Most people find 2-back manageable with practice and 3-back genuinely hard. Getting past 4-back reliably is unusual.

Should I press for every number?

No. Only when the current number matches the one N positions back. Pressing when there is no match costs you.
